Sometimes – as a trainee photographer as I term myself – we hit pay dirt with a few snaps and for once I was happy with a capture of the sunrise at the historic medieval winery estate, Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, near Valladolid, Spain.
Staying in room 206 of the former Santa Maria de Retuerta Abbey, this is the sunrise on 3rd December 2012, looking out over the plateau and part of the slumbering vineyard.
The owners first established a winery on the Estate around a decade or so ago and their wines today have won awards for their excellence. Inspired thought two was to do something with the historic hospice building which is designated a property of historic interest in Spain.
With this, they decided to do something rather clever – the architect chosen, Marco Serra and the interior designers Marlene Dorrie & Gascon y Daniela – have complemented the historic walls with a design of modern clarity using a light and sensitive touch. Thus the former monks’ cells are today’s guest rooms; the refectory is now the gastronomic restaurant Refectorio and the cloisters are the hotel’s corridors.
Today, the property is called Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, reopening its doors to guests on 22nd March 2012 – the first property in Spain to have hotel wide butler service. Rooms start at just euros 290 per night, inclusive of tax and breakfast with service discretionary.
The Estate is around a two hour drive from Madrid or around 45 minutes from Valladolid Airport (direct flights from London Stansted with Ryanair).
