Every hotel should have a stork’s nest ….

The winery estate of Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, Valladolid, Spain, which opened as a hotel on 22nd March 2012, has a rather unique selling point for bird lovers everywhere.  On the bell tower of the former Santa Maria de Retuerta Abbey, there is an extra large bird’s nest – the spring and summer home to a returning stork family and their young brood.

Estate staff keep a benevolent watch over the young family as one by one, the young leave the nest.  Indeed, for nature lovers and ornithologists, this estate is a bit of a gold mine for avian rarity.  The 700 hectares Estate and immediate area is home to over 130 different species of bird and the hotel has a full list of species sited within the grounds.  These include cormorants, storks, mallards, ospreys, red kites, buzzards, sparrowhawks, sparrows, starlings, chaffinches, crossbills, peregrine falcons and many more.  The hotel regularly organises falconry displays at LeDomaine for guests’ enjoyment.

Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, the first property in Spain to have hotel-wide butler service, offers rooms starting at just euros 290 per night, inclusive of tax and breakfast with discretionary service.

The Estate is around a two hour drive from Madrid or around 45 minutes from Valladolid  Airport (direct flights from London Stansted with Ryanair).
